Title: After Acceptance
Medium: Analog photography with damaged film
Description:
This series explores the emotional landscape of an immigrant’s connection to cherished family members through the lens of an analog camera. Captured during a recent visit to the small industrial town where my grandparents live, the images are a testament to the love and memories shared despite physical distance. The film’s damage has resulted in abstract and distorted visuals, yet familiar moments—like Grandma baking her signature dish or Grandpa playing chess—emerge through the abstraction.
Concept:
The series reflects the interplay between memory, imagination, and reality. The damaged film serves as a metaphor for the fragmented nature of long-distance relationships and the blurred lines between past and present. These images invite viewers to engage their imagination to uncover the recognizable amidst the abstract, mirroring how we navigate and interpret our own experiences and connections.
Artistic Intent:
By embracing the imperfections of damaged film, the series highlights how accidents and distortions can reveal deeper truths about our lives. It underscores the role of imagination and illusions in finding meaning and beauty within the imperfections of our world. The images, though abstract, offer a poignant reflection on the ways we hold onto and make sense of our relationships and memories.
